![]() #1440P CIVILIZATION V BACKGROUNDS PC#If you're building a PC for a particular game (or genre), and after doing your research you find that game to be a CPU intensive game like GTA V as one random example, you may want to more evenly distribute your budget towards both the GPU and CPU (instead of the norm which is to spend a fair bit more on your GPU vs the CPU). CPU intensive games, also sometimes referred to as CPU bound games, are games that have a lot of "behind the scenes" processing of non-rendering related game mechanics and gameplay, whether that's due to large game worlds, lots of in-game objects/characters/units needing processing (think strategy games), a lot of complex physics or AI, and so on. Some games place more strain on the CPU than others, therefore a certain CPU GPU pairing may cause a CPU bottleneck in one particular game, and not in another. See Also: The Best CPUs for Gaming (Intel vs AMD) However, there are always exceptions, and depending on your exact usage you may want to think through your choice of CPU and GPU a little more based on the following 3 things. Therefore, in general when building or upgrading a gaming PC, it makes sense to put more weight towards your GPU. This is because most 3D titles are more graphically demanding than they are CPU demanding, but also largely because graphics in games continue to get better and better over time, with more complex and impressive rendering algorithms and effects coming into play every few years, while the actual game logic/code (the CPU's job) stays around the same or increases only a little. Here's hoping Source 2 is at least more.let's say, forgiving in that regard.Choosing the best CPU GPU combo for your gaming PC can be very simple - when it comes to most modern games, it's typically easy to avoid your CPU bottlenecking your GPU if you follow the conventional wisdom of balancing your CPU and GPU selection with a decent skew towards the GPU (in terms budget). The AMD CrossFire status icon appears when I boot the game up, so it's definitely running. These are pretty cool-running cards.Īs for whether or not Crossfire is actually working, it does in fact work. They never go above 60 Celsius anyway, and that's with the fans off. Right now, though, they're spinning 100% because I can't be bothered to turn them down at this point since it resets to 100% when the computer shuts down. I have also not had to be too concerned about temperatures as I have Sapphire TriXX running in the background keeping my fans in check. However, playing it at lower resolutions (1440p in particular) has shown enough of an improvement that I'm comfortable with playing it at that resolution without it freaking the hell out.Īs for the questions, I'll answer them individually. It plays at just below 30 FPS now, but not really what I would call comfortable. It's an improvement now that it restarted. #1440P CIVILIZATION V BACKGROUNDS UPDATE#I'll do a quick update in the form of me saying this: running this at 4K is.well.rough. Because if BioShock can run and Civ V can run, I fail to see how anything Source can tank this badly. If anyone has a way of unborking the Source engine so that I can play stuff in 4K, that would be grand. ![]() I even reduced the resolution to 720p, one ninth of a 4K monitor, and the results did not improve much at all. Once the menu had loaded up, I loaded up the FPS counter. I ran Half-Life 2, and the first thing I noticed was how slow the splash screens were. Here's where things get interesting, however. I'll sort that out later.īioShock ran smooth as butter as well at 4K.Ĭivilization V wasn't particularly smooth, but the game's nature made it still playable for me at about 20 to 30 FPS. System Shock 2 crashed on launch, but whatever. ![]() Half-Life works perfectly fine, I hit the 100FPS cap without any issues whatsoever. I ran five games to see what worked and what didn't: Half-Life, System Shock 2, Half-Life 2, BioShock, and Civilization V. If you want to know my specification, my signature has you covered. ![]() So of course I went to try and play about with some games to see what would work with my configuration and what wouldn't. Yesterday I took delivery of an Acer K242HQK 4K monitor. Now, this is really confusing the hell out of me. ![]()
